Its Heroes Con again this year and the LAST YEAR we are going as fans, we will return next year set up at tables, like we should be. Anyways, here's our report.Saturday, Jason and I arrive and wait in line to ge in, During this time I get a pic of a fan dressed as a Green Lantern with the KIRBY KRACKLE Box. (See it in the album.) We walked once around the show and get a feel of who is where and so forth. We see Ray from the Comic Monstore from Salisbury NC, The huge lines forming to see Ed Brubaker, Steve Epting and CHris Claremont, old convention buddies Sanford Greene, Randy Green (No relation ) the Two Morrows Booth, where I thanked them again for the spot in the Jack Kirby Collector, and a few others.
Then Jason's eyes widen as he sees the STAGE- the stage with people drawing and painitng for the Annual Heroes Art Auction. He acts like a kid and asks if he can join in. They inform us that anyone can as long as there is an empty spot. He is as giddy as a school girl but I drag him to the FEUL Pizza place across the street form the Convention Center for lunch. He woofed his food down like he would never eat again and then we returned to the floor. Jason then gets a piece of bristol board and begins drawing at an EASEL. It was like he put the paper on a table and tried to draw flat, of course he was sitting down and that didn't help either. The Jay walks up and we both start in on everything he is doing wrong. It gets pretty funny and the artist next to him said "Wow, I never saw an artist get heckled before." He was drawing Morgana from the Darkstalkers video Games and comics and it was going ok for a while then his patience ran out and he went for the paints... uh oh. That's foreign territory for Jason in the first place, add to that his frustration over not being able to get it right just made for a fun time for us all the way around. Yes, we are rough on him, but its the oly way he learns!
I took the stage later and drew ORION in all pencils and it was decent. A nice guy bought it on Sunday from the Auction.Jay and I discuss the layout of the floor and look around a bit. I stopped by the DC Booth and WOW- did they come to represent! Tons of free comics, Blackest Night #0, the reprints of Planetary #1, Identity Crisis #1, Alan Moore's Swamp Thing and much more, tons of free buttons too! I raved about the Infinite Crisis and shared excitement for the upcomicng Blackest Night crossover as well.
Visiting Brain Denham who penciled Iron Man Maximum Velocity was there and we spoke to him at length. He was very cool and Jason saw his pin up painting of President Obama as Ash, from Army Of Darkness and said that he couldn't believe Brian's former co-workers at Antartic Press hadnt made Obama into a Transformer- which we all coined a "CHANGE-BOT", he laughed then pulled out his phone and actually CALLED them to tell AP about the idea!! Jason says he wants five bucks.
After a two-year absence George Perez returned! The penciler of the recent smash hit Legion of Three Words, and the first great maxi-series Crisis on Infinite Earths, was there switching between sigining and sketching. Mr. Perez took time to pose with the Kirby Krackle Box (see the album) and he loved it! I also got my promo poster of Crisis signed by him as well.
Saturday night Jason returns home to pursue his musical career... *cough-cough*
Sunday was filled with great deals, 25 cent comics abounded!!! I also met Rebecca Buchman, the inker on Green Lantern Corps, she was there with some of the original art from GLC and Justice Society and another book as well. Spoke to Dustin Nugyen and Derek Fridolfs the art team on DC's Streets of Gotham, too. Brian Pulido was there, one of Jay and his girlfriend Shelly's favorite artitsts.
All in all a good convention. The only thing missing? The Vanguards of Comics.
